I have to disagree with that that Facebook is for established fans. Facebook ads can easily be targeted towards the desired demographic and location, if the marketing material is good (this is were it can get expensive) these people will view it and share it even if they don't know the product.
This gets people familiar with the product before the walk into the shop and will help convert sales.

My wife uses facebook ads for her Pilates studio and what I have seen is that people will like and follow her posts for quite a while before finally making their way to the studio but once they join up they become highly engaged as they feel part of a group. The idea of social media group is the key, it's not about pushing an add to people so they walk about and buy a Yowie like a zombie. It's about creating a group that they want to be apart of and want to contribute to. Once you have the group they will do the selling for you.

Yowie management suggesting that people will become negatively frustrated because they can't buy Yowie's is wrong in my opinion. I believe the will become positively frustrated if they see a product they desire and can't get their hands on, this will only build up demand for the product just like a new iPhone. Honestly we want people walking into a lolly shop (candy just doesn't sound right) and demanding they get Yowies. The business will act a lot quicker than if they were approached by a sales rep pushing a product.

Here's a 6 week Facebook or Instagram marketing idea for Yowie: Each week a Yowie character figurine is introduced in a amazing landscape photo. Fans are then encouraged to post their own photos of that same character (this encourages them to go out and buy more to try and find this character) in their own landscape photo and the best photo wins a box of Yowies. This is a simple, low cost idea that gets the fans engaged and creating the marketing material. Refer to Skittles Facebook where people take shots of themselves with a rainbow. With any luck the campaign could go viral as people love to share photos they've taken.

The fact that Yowie management can't see these simple ideas suggests to me that they don't have someone on board who truly understands social media. This doesn't mean the business won't boom but it could make a big difference in overall sales and early adoption of the product.
