ST. GEORGE, Utah ? Washington County officials want the federal government to allow uranium mining around the Grand Canyon.

The Spectrum of St. George reports that the county commissioners from southern Utah say it wouldn't cause environmental damage and could bring billions of dollars to the area's economy.

The federal Bureau of Land Management is accepting public comment until May 4 on an environmental study of the proposed halt to mining in the region for the next 20 years. It would affect about a million acres in Arizona and Utah.

Conservationists say mining would destroy areas around one of the world's most recognizable natural wonders.

Representatives from the mining industry say it would have little environmental impact.
