Thanks for the reply and well done for recovering your GFC losses. So if I read you correctly, the only down side of selling shares held for over 12mths when offsetting my loss is that I miss out on the 50% CGT discount. But when offsetting against a capital loss no matter how long I have held the shares I have to claim the full capital gain. (No 12mth CGT discount if claiming against a capital loss).
So I wont have to factor in holding time whilst trying to recover and offset my losses. Due to some bad investments I shouldn't have to worry about paying CGT for quite awhile.
