Offshore wind farm plan, $8b boon for Vic
Australia's first offshore wind farm could create $8 billion worth of investment and put 250 turbines off the eastern coast of Victoria.
Under the proposal, the turbines would be positioned between 10 and 25 kilometres off the Gippsland coastline.
The plan would create 12,000 jobs during construction and 300 ongoing operational and maintenance positions
Energy Minister Lily D'Ambrosio says a preliminary analysis of the proposed site was promising.
"A new renewable power generator of this size would drive down electricity prices, and we'll support Offshore Energy wherever we can to progress this study," she said in a statement on Friday.
Offshore Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding with the federal and state governments for the proposal, which will have a feasibility study of at least three years to test its viability, Ms D'Ambrosio says.
Eastern Victoria MP Harriet Shing said the proposal would be a "game changer" for the Gippsland region, which has been hit hard by the closure of the Hazelwood power station.
The government hopes the project will be generating power in time to contribute to its renewable energy target of 40 per cent by 2025.
