At minimum it puts these questions on their radar and gives insight into the what answers shareholders are expecting to come to light at some stage. Even if they can't answer.
I would bet many a company have been burnt over the last 4 or 5 years with timelines, expectations, and forward looking statements, so playing that sort of stuff very close to the chest, even via informal emails is probably becoming standard.
