Wrong, the Expiry date is the date you have up to to convert your options into shares. Would suggest to submit your conversion form with payment at least a week prior to expiry date to be considered for processing. Forms available from company or the company share register eg. Computershare Etc.. best to email them and request a copy (Always handy to have a copy even if you don't end up converting)

Converting options to shares can be done at any time prior to expiry date, generally only done though when it makes financial sense. Best converting is when the share price is equal to or more than what you paid for the option + the strike price, you come out even or up.
But if the share price is marginally less, then it still may be worth converting the options to save your investment, especially if you believe the company's future will see you in profit. (Bit like when you buy a share then there is a retrace)
