Most accident victims are kept alive to some basic functioning until organ donation can be worked out.

Often they'll keep a brain dead patient who has no chance of survival alive long enough to check their organ donation status.

I know it happens a lot at the Alfred in Melbourne (the Vic centre for severe road accident trauma).

Some will die at the scene, previously those pronounced dead at the scene presumably were ineligible for heart transplantation. Now, they would be eligible.

So its actually quite a specific subset of donors this will open up, you wont be able to goto a 20year dead cadaver, harvest the heart and make life anew. It's nothing that game changing.

But its going to save the lives of many hundreds of people a year, so it's all good.
