I agree with you that WM should learn to move aside and give/hand-over the helm to someone who can sail.
He is good at what he is doing and I don't' believe that many would disagree with that. But there are places, and places, for everyone in the world. Especially in a mining company.
But, IMHO, that is a hard thing to do on it's own, and I most probably would be like him in fighting to keep it the way it is as well. But, the basics is, that many investor's money is on the table, not just his own.
IMHO, if he was to do that, things will change dramatically with the Company, and most importantly all for the best.
It take more that a Director's buying to reinstall confidence which has been badly shattered already. Believe me mate.
All in all, I can honestly say that I do not envy him in his current position and predicament.
