Regarding Pravda there was a funny story around in the 80's that went something like this. Pravda (means Truth) and the tabloid rag Ivestia(means News)

The Russians used to say the Truth isn't News and the News isn't Truth, which was as much a they could get away with in their society at that time.

At least they knew enough about human nature to realise that they were being lied to on an ongoing basis whereas we care more about the latest rubbish on the box while the real debates are decided by others, to our cost.
