I agree completely. Most people lead a life of perpetual debt, working at a job they don't like, buying things they don't need or can afford, all to impress people they don't know or don't like.
I am not materialistic. Give me a tropical island with rain water tanks, solar electricity and mobile Internet and I'd be happy. (I still need to learn).
