"In a minor setback for Karoon, the underground rock formation targeted by its well--the Santonian--didn't contain any oil. Instead, Karoon discovered oil in the Eocene formation, which lies on top of the Santonian.
The well caught the edge of the Eocene, so there could be more oil further up the geological structure. The joint venture has the option of drilling an appraisal well nearby and further "up dip" to find out if this is the case.
"The discovery of oil in Eocene aged reservoirs at Kangaroo-1 provides additional confidence in the other prospects within Karoon's blocks including the Emu and Bilby exploration targets," it said in a statement.
