There is still plenty of shale. Shale provided most of Australia's petroleum needs up until the 1930s after which our requirements were met from the oil fields in the Middle East.
Newnes in the Wolgan valley and Glen Davis in the Capetee valley were the main shale oil produces in NSW, with Glen Davis closing down in the 1950s.
Shale oil refining couldn't compete with natural flow oil and that's the main reason for their closures but when necessity comes to requirement there is still plenty of oil available through shale and not to mention coal as well!!!
