One involves malicious and vengeful intent, the other is necessary and minimally forceful action to prevent violence. You can't tell the difference?

Forcefully pulling someone away would be an example of the latter. Trying to allay your fears by bashing an attacker with malicious intent is simply a continuation of violence. You'd be doing the same thing as the offender.
