Yes whilst men are the main victims of violence they are also the main perpetrators - usually it's man on man. But one thing to consider if you take away the last two generations (in the western world at least) what were the two main roles of men (and for which they were most praised and valued in society)? Throughout 99.9% of human existence on the planet it was 1. Provider - which usually meant hunter and 2. Soldier.

So if for 99.9% of their time on the planet men were trained, praised and valued for being hunters and soldiers - and those proficient in these areas had their genes passed on - there is going to be a bit of residual DNA built up. And conversely for 99.9% of women's time on the planet they were most value and praised as nurturers and care-givers. Now modern western society has decided we no longer need or value being a good hunter and soldier..........
