As a women I can attest to the fact. Not every moment perhaps. But definitely when I have to work late and then have to catch the train and walk from the train station at night to my car, when I have Friday drinks at work and have to find my way home or when I pick up groceries at night and I am loading it into my car in a dimly lit carpark.
