I would say that generally the present young generation are more influenced by social media than anything else. And we know that social media has a leftwing bias built in by Google.
The question of parent influence is interesting. Over the generations I believe you would see more of a negative effect, that is whatever the parent says the offspring will most often take the opposing view. There are exceptions, eg in strongly politically involved families there would be a greater tendency to take the party line. But not many families are strongly into politics imho.
My view is there is no general rule about young = left, old = conservative. I've met many older people who are rabid Labor supporters because they have been all their lives.
