Director's fine 'no issue'

CHILDCARE operator G8 Education is standing by managing director Chris Scott after he was fined $130,000 in a tribunal following a dispute with the Queensland Office of Fair Trading.

Mr Scott was fined and agreed never again to operate as a resident letting agent in Queensland after this week appearing in the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

The dispute stretched back to Mr Scott's days in the accommodation business in 2005 and 2006.

The OFT had alleged Mr Scott "had failed to ensure Driftcove, a company of which he was then director, acted in the best interests of its clients and failed to fully disclose charges on accommodation bookings".

Craig Chapman, chief executive and a director of G8, said the tribunal outcome was "not an issue".

"Why would it be?" Mr Chapman said, adding he was unable to speak about the tribunal decision and nor was he involved in the matter.

Mr Scott has not returned Courier-Mail queries.

G8, which plans to run almost 200 centres, describes the 63-year-old as a "hands-on" manager who founded the S8 group.

Australian Shareholders' Association chief executive Stuart Wilson said generally speaking shareholders could take into account a senior executive's "history and in particular, any disciplinary action from government agencies".

"It would be up to shareholders to press (anyone deemed) inappropriate . . . to be removed from the organisation," he said.
