re: "old world" publisher "sneaky" news!! I see it as another 'progression' or, confirmation of where they (OLD media) are generally heading. I have had a feeling that there is a definate possibility, ( or, is it an area yet to be further developed?) that could see a number of (pocket) networks that will take shape, remembering that < Gannett, Knight-Ridder and Tribune, three of the largest US newspaper chains, have each bought a 25 percent stake IN........
Topix.net, a privately held startup ... >
http://www.infoworld.com/article/05/03/23/HNtopixnet_1.html
Topix.net were once (unofficial) "official" partners (supplying content to/)with Looksmart, according to a notice found within a results page, on one of Look's Verticals. That, and that "news" etc 'bar', that was previously located above the results page in the Verticals, have been taken away. Why? Perhaps this is the 1st signs of a group (a network) taking shape?
A 'beta' trial version perhaps?
(Incidentally, I continue to see INCX, with Local.com as a target of NWS or, LOOK initially) and the UK set-up, already linked back to Furl's latest results page, consolidates this thoughtline.)
But back to Gannett & co ....They can still get a Furl/F/A's deal on a full scale basis and 'run' there 'own' network, so to speak. Check the results here and substitute the RHS banner with "local" advertiser contextuals, supplied by this possible network and (naturally) to the benefit of such a network. Gannett & co, would get the same results as these!!

Where the Yellow Page 'spot' is, they can have there own "search local" arrangements, through their "new" announced
purchase/partnership with planet discover.
The "flexibility" and "range" of a Furl, F/A's advantage, is almost unlimited! Remembering, the more networks the 'merrier' for Looksmart, as we get to contextualise every result page, on our Verticals. eg: - Baseball Digest (from above CBS4 results - currently has Google's Adsense)

Or, in the case of LookSmart Collectibles & Looksmart Phoenix, where that "City Kids" banner is, down the RHS in collectables, or, Google adsense again, in the case of the Phoenix example.

From Looksmart's angle, more 'visitors' to Vertical results pages equal more revenues ...Q1 showed an approx $1.00 in revenue for each single visitor!!!!! They 'call in' on their way to a content partner's site.........
Any Gannett type 'deal' (with Looksmart) can show how they all get a 'crack' at localising their own advertisers in relation to the search querry, as shown in the above CBS4 results page ......They only need a Looksmart ("FindArticles in...") button, to be installed on each of their stated, existing 100-plus Web sites .......... And don't even go down the future road of their also stated < nearly 1,000 non-daily publications in the USA and USA WEEKEND, a weekly newspaper magazine.... >
(see previous post)
Results 1 - 10 of about 260,000 for FindArticles in USA weekend
http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=FindArticles+in+USA+weekend&btnG=Search&meta=
Wont they, (those 1000 non-daily publications) be getting their own websites & a "FindArticles in..." search button plus Furl, too? You bet they will !!!!!!!!!!! (It's 10 times Newscorps own, over 100, 'free' local weekly rags, owned here in OZ)
And Looksmart closed DOWN again overnight and has a current market cap, of just $96.88M !!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL !! LOL !!
