OM Holdings is restarting in-pit mining operations at the Bootu Creek manganese mine in the Northern Territory in a staged manner after they were suspended last August.
After gaining approval from the Northern Territory Department of Primary Industry and Resources, the staged restart will be subject to independent review and approval as in-pit operations recommence.
Bootu Creek operations were suspended because of a fatal accident at the site’s Tourag pit.
Following the accident, a team of independent geotechnical engineers completed a review and report of the incident.
Operations at Bootu Creek pits that have already been reviewed and deemed safe have already commenced, however there are no current proposals to resume activities at the Tourag pit where the fatality took place.
The company has recognised the Department of Primary Industry and Resources, Northern Territory police and NT WorkSafe for their ongoing efforts in getting operations back up and running safely.
“The company will continue to work with all relevant authorities and stakeholders during the staged recommencement of mining process,” OM Holdings stated.
“Employee and contractor safety continue to be a priority for the company.”
Bootu Creek, which is near Tennant Creek in central Northern Territory, experienced a production drop during the September 2019 quarter due to the ceased operations.
Production slumped to 101,877 tonnes of ore for the September quarter before mining halted, plummeting from 356,820 tonnes in the previous quarter.
