AML and OMH are rumored to be in talks to build a joint venture in Malaysia to produce silicon metal and ferrosilicon. OMH produces about 200,000-220,000 mtpy of ferrosilicon at its Sarawak smelter in Malaysia and AML’s Pertama smelter has the capacity to produce 22,000 mtpy of combined ferroalloys, including ferrosilicon which accounts for about 40%, silicomanganese and ferromanganese at its Malaysian plant. Both companies enjoy discounted power rates at their Malaysian smelters.
