Clearly China wants to 'reunify' Taiwan and they want to stay independent and democratic.
The only thing stopping China from invading or blockading/sanctioning Taiwan is the USA.
Interestingly there is no longer a treaty or guarantee from the US

Ultimately, the core of any security guarantee is not legal obligation, but political will. Legally speaking, Taiwan lacks an ironclad U.S. security guarantee against an attack by China, but this is true for just about everyone else as well – including NATO. Whether the U.S. will come to the defense of Taiwan, or any other country, is largely contingent on questions of diplomacy, military facts, and political will.
The treaty they did have ended with Carter in 1980

IMO China is building up its military and economic power where a quick strike or a longer economic strangle will not arouse the US to action. Key to this is who is president and the current unity/will of the people against China and towards Taiwan.
If I was living in Taiwan, I would not welcome a Biden (long time know China friend) vs the adversarial Trump.
