Litigation funding is not yet properly regulated in Australia - the federal government still has to pass some laws which will probably take a year or two, litigation legislation even varies from state to state which makes things messy and difficult to navigate for parties concerned.
Also, DLA Piper would find itself in a conflict of interest - on the one hand they charge AVZ legal fees for providing their services and on the other hand they would be providing funds to AVZ to pay for DLA's legal services. They could also be tempted to overcharge AVZ, I guess...
