'Maybe Matmor will tick all the boxes IF it gets out of the lab.'
You may or may not be aware that NMDC's 3 MTPA Nagarnar plant uses the Hismelt process, which was developed in Australia by Rio Tinto. Rio closed its operation in 2011, but the technology was then shown to be very viable under Indian conditons. It uses ore and non-coking coal fines and a variety of low rank coals. The plant is due to open this year, I believe.
The point here is that that technology was already a billion dollar investment by Rio. It has taken NMDC six years to build the Nagarnar plant from its initial tests on the Kwinana plant.
Matmor is still only an R&D initiative under consideration.
