Tesla, Southern California Edison unveil world's largest lithium-ion battery storage project

Tesla and Southern California Edison have unveiled what they are calling the largest lithium-ion battery storage project in the world in Ontario, California. Tesla claims the new Powerpack installation at the SCE Mira Loma substation will reduce the Los Angeles Basin’s reliance on natural gas peaker plants.

The Powerpack facility is smaller, more flexible, and easier to expand than peaking power plants The batteries can be charged when demand for power is low and store up to 80 megawatt-hours. That is enough to power 15,000 homes for our hours.
“This project is part of our vision at Southern California Edison to take advantage of the wind and the sun, and operate a flexible grid that delivers clean energy to power our homes, our businesses and our vehicles," Kevin Payne, CEO of Southern California Edison, said at the ribbon-cutting held Jan. 30, 2017.
Tesla and Southern California Edison agreed to the project in September of 2016 after the California Public Utilities Commission directed the utility to expedite the use of energy storage connected to the grid to mitigate for the loss of natural gas storage at Southern California Gas Company’s Aliso Canyon following a massive leak. The leak sent an estimated 96,000 metric tons of methane into the atmosphere for four months beginning in October of 2015.
“This project is exactly in line with our mission to accelerate sustainable technology and sustainable energy broadly for the world,” Tesla Chief Technology Officer,JB Straubel said.
There is no information available on the final cost of the project.
