Satyajit Das uses a new book, As Gods Among Men: A History of the Rich in the West, as a point of departure for a discussion of the acquisition and uses of wealth. Das makes many incisive observations, but one particularly important one is, contrary to eagerly-promoted mythology, how small a proportion of significant wealth is actually earned, as in a product of individual enterprise.
