Yes that is so true, if we weren't lucky enough to have commodities we'd be another Greece.
The big danger is the more of the population that end up dependant on welfare and not contributing economically the less likely there will be a reform minded government as this majority will keep voting for a government that sustains there welfare check.
This is what we are seeing in many European countries now, they will simply be left behind in this new globalized world by the more productive, competitive countries.
