First AC bus shelters installed in Dubai

    Dubai
Right Angle Media has handed over the first air-conditioned bus shelter, located on Beach Road in front of the Burj Al Arab, to the Dubai Roads Transport Authority (RTA).
Designed specifically for Dubai, the bus shelter is crescent-shaped, modular and easily scalable to accommodate varying crowds at different bus stops.
The standard bus shelter will be six metres long, scalable to 9 metres where higher passenger traffic is expected. By providing cool comfort to passengers waiting for buses, the RTA hopes to entice more people to use the bus service, which will help lessen growing traffic on roads.
Right Angle Media was awarded this contract by the RTA to manufacture and install 500 air conditioned bus shelters by July 2007. The 10-year contract is on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis.
The entire investment towards the manufacture, installation and maintenance of these shelters will be borne solely by Right Angle Media. Total projected costs for the company over the contract period are likely to be in the vicinity of Dh210 million ($57.17 million). In return, Right Angle Media has been given the right to sell advertising space as a top panel on the bus shelter and a double faced mupi at every location.
By July 2007, addition of these 1,500 outdoor sites is expected to add significantly to the growing outdoor media market in Dubai.
“While we are obviously a business that needs to be profitable, Right Angle Media is passionate about adding value to host cities by first making sure that our projects provide a public service and also beautify it. Urban street furniture is an essential factor in creating the right look for a city, and needs to be carefully designed to blend with the local setting and culture” said Raman Multani, CEO, Right Angle Media.
In keeping with this philosophy, the company has committed that each bus shelter will have at least two public utilities, which could be a combination of newspaper, drinks, snack or telephone card-vending machines, ATMs or public telephones. Each location will also have dustbins for paper, plastic and glass to encourage the general public to recycle garbage. -TradeArabia News Service

The Dubai government is revamping its public transport system to provide a near door-to-door connection through its buses, said a senior official. "We are spending Dh1 billion to improve our public bus transport system as part of our transport master plan," said Mohammad Obaid Al Mulla, Chief Executive Officer of the Public Transport Agency at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Al Mulla told reporters after inaugurating the first air-conditioned bus shelter in the world, that about 1,800 hi-tech buses would be included in the public bus fleet in the next three years while the existing 500 buses would also be gradually replaced. The buses will include double-deckers and articulated (long) buses with higher passenger capacity. "There will be more routes and more bus stops around the city," he said. There will be more than 1,000 buses operational in Dubai by the end of next year. He said the new buses will have higher security with cameras and other electronic gadgets to monitor movement of buses and passengers. (Gulf News)
