Many international tourists are interested in sampling a cities night life and 1:30am is still quite early really...just think this is very bad for tourism and Sydney trying to be an international city competing with New York, Hong Kong, Singapore etc.
When overseas sporting events are in Europe or other far off time zones (e.g. Rugby Union Autumn international, Word Cup matches, European Cup etc) I won't be able to watch them at a pub with some atmosphere, that is not good in my book.
Magistrates need to start getting tough and giving longer sentences to thuggish behavior but I'm against some of the early closing hours - just more Nanny State rules where 99.9% of the population are getting penalized for the actions of 0.1% - next they'll be proposing prohabition.
