I'm simply expressing my understanding and asking fellow GDNers' opinion.
I'll have to use T4P's picture to explain what I'm thinking
If you look at the green and orange areas below the well #1, it's not drawn continuously to the ones at below #3. If there are gas and oils separated like that, a well #1 won't be able to measure the estimate reserve under the #3.
I'm not saying they need to drill 50 wells to get the estimate reserve. (they might have to drill 50 wells to recover the whole reserve though but not for the estimation.) What I'm saying is they might need a few exploratory wells like #1 to get the total size of the estimated reserve for the whole project.
No Agenda. Just my opinion. Wish some experts correct me if i'm wrong.
