NRA approves Sendai’s long-term operation

Jiji PressTOKYO (Jiji Press) — The Nuclear Regulation Authority on Wednesday approved maintenance plans for the No. 1 reactor at Kyushu Electric Power Co.’s Sendai nuclear power station in Kagoshima Prefecture.

The Sendai reactor, which was put into operation in July 1984, is expected to be restarted as early as next week. All nuclear reactors in the country are currently offline.

The NRA found the maintenance plans for the 31-year-old reactor to be sufficient, including a new method to estimate the reactor’s deterioration.

As Kyushu Electric has not yet finished seismic resistance assessments on all equipment at the Sendai reactor, the regulators urged the company to complete the unfinished work within a year.

Also on Wednesday, the NRA announced the results of its safety checks for all nuclear plants in the country, pointing out some 800 breaches of regulatory standards at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency’s Monju fast-breeder nuclear reactor in Fukui Prefecture. None of the violations immediately affect the safety of
