poor old Liberal supporters --------------- look back to the glory days eh
when Billy Hughes -- then Nationalist Party (anti Labor) (he was earlier Labor, then changed and became conservative) and Prime Minister

then he brought in what would be preferential voting -

so - how's it workin out for you fellas??????

''The preferential voting system in Australia was introduced by the conservative federal government led by Billy Hughes in 1918[2]. This was done primarily in response to the rise of the Country Party, which represented small farmers[2].
The main reasons for introducing preferential voting were:
    1. To address the split in the anti-Labor vote in conservative country areas[2].
    2. To allow competition between the two conservative parties (Hughes' Nationalist Party and the Country Party) without risking seats to the Labor Party[2].
    3. To ensure that candidates elected had majority support, as preferential voting requires candidates to receive over 50% of the vote[1].
The system was first used in a federal by-election for the seat of Corangamite on December 14, 1918[2]. It's worth noting that Queensland had already introduced preferential voting for state elections in 1892[2].
This change to preferential voting has had a lasting impact on Australian politics, helping to support the three-party system that has remained fundamentally unchanged to this day[3]. The system has since been extended to both upper and lower houses in federal, state, and territory legislatures, as well as to many other types of elections in Australia[2].
