The director of Karoon Energy said (ABC, Inside Bus, 2012) that oceanic shallow drills and wells were a good bit more risky than deep wells. He seemed to imply that that onshelf prospecting was fraught with failure. He wasn't specific about the word shallow. Was this water depth, or total depth?
NDO drills onshelf, but the deposits may be quite deep ... say 3 - 4km under the shelf. In this case I would think that being on or off shelf is irrelevant.
