If you paid for the option and it expires, you get to claim a capital loss (at the expiry date). It's no different to a company going bankrupt really, where you get to claim a capital loss, once the administrator/liquidator makes an official written declaration that there is no chance for sny further proceeds.
Sorry for those in that situation, hopefully you have some CTP/O and it more than makes up for it. Might be a big week coming.
