I agree with you that there are some gross excesses and extremes, however the old ways resulted in needless tragedies, strong troublesome unions still found plenty of excuses for their excesses, and Australia never discovered any underexplored continents, nor put man into space. WRT NASA you might care to note that loss of life tends to be associated with loss of billions of dollars of hardware. I don't believe that story is unique to NASA.
LTI's of 10 to 15 were unacceptable IMO, as was widespread resistance to use of safety gear etc, and exposure to asbestos. The fatality rate in the building industry until recently was another horrific story.
Whilst the cost to the employer may (or may not) have been less in the past, huge costs were externalised onto the individual, there families and society.
