M&M: How can gold producers manage the risks involved with operating in higher-risk jurisdictions, such as West Africa?
MB: Well, I think the key is, what’s happened in the last ten years is the new gold supply shifted from the industrialised countries or more industrialised countries to the emerging markets and the less industrialised countries, of which Africa is one. As I point out, if you want to go and find world-class assets, you’ve got to go where the geology takes you. So you’re going to go into higher-risk jurisdictions, and when you do that, you’ve got to be able to manage that. We haven’t done that well. As an industry, we’ve tended to exploit countries, rather than build relationships. You can’t manage that risk without strong partnerships.
The first step in that is we’ve got to focus on world-class assets again, because without world-class assets, you can’t create a business than can afford to ensure everyone benefits. We’re renters of national assets, the mining industry. We don’t own them. So, if we don’t deliver that value, not only to our shareholders, but more importantly to the governments in the countries that we operate in, you’ll see they’ll change the rules.
So we have a situation developing in the gold industry which is not too dissimilar to what we’ve already seen in the platinum industry. That doesn’t bode well for the industry going forward, and we’ve got to change that. The first thing is we’ve got to tell the truth about our costs, and we have to build stronger relationships in the countries we operate in. You can’t do that by driving it from a head office in Denver or Johannesburg or London. You’ve got to get out there and run your businesses.
