Open Pit Mining

Not sure if this is a science topic??

It seems to be a bit of damage to ecosystems due to the open pit mining in areas of high rainfall (just an example).

One issue is acidification from Cu and Au extraction and resolving the tailing dam (heavy metals etc) issues (an example Vale and BHP)

me wonders if there is a cheap way to reduce this issue?

any knowledge out there?
