Go to Google scholar and type in "Scandium extraction".
There are a lot of other patented methods, none appear to be as capable.
Remember, the market for Sc at the minute is tiny, the metal is just too expensive, so no-one uses it. The cost needs to come down an order of magnitude for it to be particularly viable for mass scale industry.
So, as with everything else, extraction overheads matter, a lot.
