I disagree. Two different markets here. Static and liquid energy. Solar will not deliver you liquid energy which is what the world is constrained for. Converting the world to hybrid electric cars would be an infrastructure project of immense proportions and would take decades to complete. And you likely see massive wave 2 of a ratchetting in price of all metals commodities.

Short to medium term is where the problem lies and for this reason biomass to liquid energy is the only real renewable project worth investing in as the end using infrastructure is already built and consuming. You can make ethanol from plant wastes or even biodiesel depennding on the pathways you develop to fuel.

What you fail to understand Peter is that for every tonne of grain removed around the world there is likely still 1-2 tonnes of crop waste accompanying that production which currently is not utilised as a feedstock for much. This is a wasted resource. Now coal prices have risen this will be viewed as a valuable feedstock in the future.

As a renewable liquid fuel, biomass to liquids is where it is at. Should that really surprise people? I mean we are essentially using fossilised plants anyway ...

What renewable companies are you investing Peter? If their technology is so compelling no doubt you are putting your money where your mouth is?
