I've always felt that Brexit was the UK's business. If the UK left, there would be some serious hits to the economy, but eventually it would recover.
But the UK might change too. Scottish separatism soared overnight when Margaret Thatcher introduced a poll tax in 1989. Imagine the reaction of Scots when they encounter the dog's breakfast of the chaotic first few months of Brexit. Nicola Sturgeon could get a referendum up with the logic that if the UK has the right to decide to exit the EU, then surely Scotland has the same right to exit the UK. Independence might win.
One of the main reasons the last referendum on Scottish independence failed was that an independent Scotland would crash out of the EU and have to reapply. Now those voters, who are happy in the EU, are being taken out of it against their will by English voters.
Scotland used to have the same income per capita as Denmark. Now it's half that, due to its economic dependency on the UK, where decisions taken are often not in Scotland's best interests. Being a small country in the EU will almost certainly benefit them economically, even with a customs border to their south.
