MEP TERRASANTM WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEM SIGNIFICANT PHOSPHOROUS RESULTS.
The ongoing evaluation trials of the TerraSan system at a Brisbane sewerage plant continue to provide extremely significant and positive results. The latest laboratory data reveals that the TerraSan system can reduce phosphorous levels from 10-12 milligrams per litre to a remarkable 0.11 milligrams per litre in effluent waters. Optum and its advisors believe that this is an exceptional result given that phosphorous has typically eluded attempts by water authorities to remove it from sewage and industrial effluent. Until now, a reduction to around 2 milligrams/litre has generally been accepted as a first class result. TerraSan has demonstrated that it can dramatically reduce that figure to one-twentieth of the concentration. The eradication or elimination of phosphorous in water is considered of vital importance. Phosphorous is a significant environmental hazard which can cause waters become totally unfit for human consumption or recreational purposes. When discharged into waterways, phosphorous can lead to excessive algal growth which under certain conditions is a contributing factor in the development of toxic blue-green blooms in freshwater and red blooms in saltwater. In turn, the water is eventually starved of oxygen causing the destruction of aquatic life. The TerraSan and MariSan systems grew out of a recognition that membrane-reverse osmosis systems were approaching or had approached the limit of their technical improvement. The systems were proving expensive to operate in terms of energy consumption and the cost and frequency of membrane replacement meshes. In an energy and Kyoto conscious age the power required to force effluent through ultra-fine meshes is becoming increasingly unacceptable in terms of energy burn and environmental damage. MEP developed their visionary new generation system by intricately refining established elements of wastewater treatment (deflocculation and flotation, ionisation and oxidation) and then coupling them into a powerful, world-patented system driven by a PLC. The PLC is linked to an extensive network of real time sensor probes which makes a fully automated operation possible. An intelligent over-ride facility allows an operator to "benchmark¡± the system to facilitate the reduction of specific or problematic contaminants. Because MariSan was developed for the marine industry and primarily the cruise-ship industry the system is both highly adaptable and compact. Its small footprint and its low energy drawdown are significant features of the system. Advanced discussions are being held with both land-based and marine industry clients regarding applications and sales of the TerraSan and MariSan systems. MEP have recently installed a 250 tonne per day MariSan system onto the ¡°Silver Shadow¡± (a major cruise liner on the North American tour route) demonstrating the continuing acceptance and growing recognition of the MEP systems internationally. Results from the current series of technical evaluations conducted on the TerraSan system provides substantial evidence as to the systems unique capacity to efficiently and effectively treat and recycle all forms of wastewaters.
