Appreciate your compassion. I've heard the arguments for market activities like shorting and high frequency trading. Use of terms like "price discovery" or "market liquidity" makes them sound all very noble, and they might not be such a bad thing if used with that sort of outcome in mind. But those of us who have been around markets a while and seen them evolve into their present state know that in practice these are more often used as tools by those with resources and connections to manipulate markets and fleece other participants. Share markets have moved well away from resembling actual markets, and become something more akin to the oft-quoted casino, where different sets of players are playing with very different odds. Take care out there.
