Back from some time away in the last couple of days so a good opportunity to read up on the recently submitted Supplementary Report for the Optimised Mardie Project (5.35Mtpa Salt and 140 ktpa SoP).
Some interesting details which are in addition to the obvious approvals for the new crystalliser locations and SOP Plant.
For me, one of the most interesting, and a solution for one of the most costly construction items, is that Mardie will have its very own Quarry on site!!! It thereby provides an answer to a long standing question of mine, being where will they source all the rock from for the Rock Armour protection of the 20+klm long main Sea Wall/s? Also the obvious cost of sourcing that same rock and transporting it to site....
To be situated just off the Mardie Rd, near the Nth West Coastal Hway, the new quarry will be sized at 15.5 hectares, within a 89 hectare specific site.
Quarry
A quarry is required to provide armour rock and other construction material for the construction
and maintenance of the Optimised Proposal. The quarry is to be located adjacent to the Mardie
Access Road and lies approximately 1 km north-west of the Mardie Access Road - North West
Coastal Highway intersection (Figure 3). The quarry covers an area of approximately 15.5 ha and
will be mined to a depth of up to 20 m. Up to 2 Mm3 of material will be extracted during the first
four years of construction and operation. The quarry may operate for the life of the Optimised
Proposal at a reduced rate with the purpose of providing rock material for the maintenance of
embankments and roads.
Mined material will be moved via front end loader to a mobile crushing and screening plant
located adjacent to the quarry where it will be processed and sized dependant on the end use.
Crushed material will be sorted and stacked adjacent to the crushing and screening plant. As
required, the processed material will be loaded onto haul trucks and transported via the Mardie
Access Road to its intended destination.
The target rock resource is relatively homogenous; therefore, it is expected that all mined material
will be utilised. As such, there is not expected to be any waste material (any undersized material
can be used for road maintenance, pathways and landscaping). Construction and operation of the
quarry will require the following supporting infrastructure:
• Access road from Mardie Access Road to the Quarry;
• Laydown;
• Office;
• Mobile crushing and screening plant;
• Small workshop;
• Material stockpiles; and
• Explosives magazine.
Whilst this operation of the Quarry will most likely be contracted, this would be a major cost saver for the Mardie project.
FYI.
