China Coal Bed Methane Exploration Campaign 2004 (Ross Naumann)

Ross and the China Coal Bed Methane (CBM) exploration team completed a three-hole exploration campaign in the northern region of the Ordos Basin of China free of injury or environmental damage, below cost and ahead of schedule.

The challenges faced by the project were significant. Internationally, there is intense sceptical perception of industrial safety in China. The region of exploration is recognised for adverse road conditions, adverse weather, and poor driving habits. The cultural norms for safety and environmental management were very different to the Company's expectation and the exploration site was also very close to local villages encouraging inquisitiveness that required constant vigilance.

From the outset the team adopted a ‘safety first' position which was constantly reinforced with campaign partners that included a Chinese drilling contractor and multiple sub-contractors. ‘Safety-first' examples included leading by example in using safety equipment, conducting inspections and sharing improvement ideas; applying full journey plans for all staff travelling to the site; and developing unique refuse pit to contain standard refuse, prevent vermin entry and eliminate wind blown waste.

The campaign is now recognised as leading practice, proving that successful, safe, environmentally managed projects can be undertaken in China.
