Optogenetics have been around for many years, but only in 5 humans for the RetroSense/Allergan trial, which seems bogged down. There are more to come, patents to squabble over, criticisms to overcome, but it will eventuate. Opinions differ on how the light exposure to neurons results in something the brain can recognise - garbage in garbage out - sort of issues. Generally the neural cells are non dividing which helps safety.........Cheers, Japes
