Elanco helped set the parameters for the trial. What goes in the decision making process behind Elanco's locked doors is none of PAA's business. They've got to weigh up a lot of things going - they have been cancelling prospective jobs left and right and focusing hard on ongoing projects as they've been under big financial pressure, underperforming while bedding down a huge and costly and complex merger and have had a huge class action brought against them by shareholders claiming that they'd been misled by Elanco on their financial prospects/performance. Sol PAA is supposed to have a magic insight into all that? And on top of that there was still the outstanding appetance issue revealed by last years' dog trial - a real problem if you're going to give pills to your dog at home.
As for the issues at Leiden, well yeah, they were stupid to say "imminent" because that set them up to cause major disappointment with the passage of time. It seems they expected Leiden to overcome the technical solubility issue of testing mpl much faster than the months that it actually took. btw this was not a medication issue, this was an issue with the testing apparatus that operates at billionths of a part and was ultimately overcome.
