"That's the part I don't get - how does short selling make you money? You might sell a truckload of shares, and push the price down ... but then what? You still have to buy them all back to lock in any profit."

Short selling obviously is not profitable if all it involves is the shorter simply buying back the shares they had sold. It becomes profitable when it initiates sell orders from other market participants, thereby driving the price down further. This may be achieved by it influencing sentiment as discussed in the Emotions thread, or by triggering recognisable stop loss positions (which are interrelated). This only may require a few trades of a single share.

Charts of AJX price history are continually displayed on this forum, with commentary on the positioning of relevant support levels and the particular significance of recent trade prices. This then becomes common knowledge to readers, and in any case is more widely recognisable. Although this is valuable information, the direction in which the SP moves away from these levels can influence sentiment and stop-loss activation, and potentially aide shorting activity or accentuate the effect of small volume trades.
