I think it is a good gesture, regardless of who came up with the idea.
Don't forget he also owns 1million shares and lots of options that have not vested. It appear he also forfeited $2.5m of equity from previous years.
Lets say $6m on shares, $1.5m on this year's bonus and $2.5m from pervious year. Close to $10m.
I think he shares our pain a bit.
