Price increases have been announced for pulp, containerboard and export logs. The April inventory and shipment data is supportive of global attempts to raise pulp (US$15-30 per tonne) and containerboard (US$30 per tonne) prices in May. Carters is highly leveraged to rising commodity prices. A US$50 per tonne increase in pulp prices enhances EBIT by NZ$50m, a US$50 per tonne increase in the price of linerboard enhances EBIT by NZ$22m, and a US$5 per tonne increase in log prices enhances EBIT by NZ$50m. Carters is targeting NZ$40m in cost savings (annualised) from the Forestry division, driven by lower stevedoring, harvesting and distribution costs. The recent restructuring of the Kinlieth mill is expected to reduce operating costs by NZ$12m pa. Working capital continues to be reduced and capex is constrained.
