I have a family member who was suicidal and nobody knew about it until many years later. My whole family suffers from depression and/or a bi-polar condition, including myself. You would think one of us would have picked it up.

Do you really think that we broadcast we are depressed? Do you think we gladly accept help? The whole point of depression is that you are not thinking straight, do not see things as they really are. We are not nutters, but at times we are unwell.

I do not see some of my dearest friends for years at a time, but I know they will come if I am in crisis and I know I can call them. Coffee twice a year would be even better.

I really liked the comment I heard once. If someone is suffering a heart attack, do you tell them to buck up and get over it? Mental illness is just that, an illness. You can't always tell someone is ill by looking at them or talking to them.
