Another angle imo is that it would have been untenable to take Osama as a prisoner ... how long would it take and how many times would it occur that innocent westerners (or groups of) were taken hostage to try to force release of Osama ... and been executed when release was refused.
Killed during collateral gunfire was more than likely assessed to be the cleanest "solution".
